Limulus.net Changes ISP

Limulus.net is no longer being hosted at Hurricane Electric. HE has been a great ISP, but for quite some time I’ve been wishing I had root access so I could set up virtual hosts and do other super-user things. It wasn’t until recently, with the advent of fast and cheap virtualization software, that this became affordable.

After looking into Virtual Private Server hosts for about a month, I finally settled on Xelhosting. They had some uptime issues at first, but they seem to be completely resolved (current uptime 20 days).

The switch in ISP has also brought about a switch in HTTP servers. Previously using Apache, limulus.net now uses lighttpd. I don’t have anything against Apache, however lighttpd is ideal when you only have 128MB of RAM to work with. I think I’ve managed to port everything over fine, but let me know if you see anything returning errors or displaying oddly.

How long have you had an account with Xelhosting? I’m considering switching myself because of the excessive downtime on my current host, I need something more reliable.

Also, just curious, which OS did you go with?

I’ve only had the account since late December 2005. Naturally, the day I posted this entry my virtual server was rebooted, so the current uptime record is still 20 days. Been up 10 days since then, however.

I have a friend using unixshell, and my uptime is definitely beating his.

As for the OS, I went with Debian Sarge because I was familiar with it and because it has the smallest default install.
